Counsellors are not currently included in the Medicare rebate scheme, so sessions are not eligible for a rebate. However, counselling fees are lower than standard psychologist fees and are often comparable to the out-of-pocket cost after a rebate. For ongoing support beyond the usual 10 sessions available under a Mental Health Care Plan, counselling can also be a more cost-effective option.
